The Last 100 Feet
Switching to an EV is a mindset shift, not a technology problem. The electricity is already at your house. It just has to travel the last 100 feet.
Nobody argues that home kitchens are impractical because restaurants serve food faster. Yet that is almost exactly the argument people make against electric vehicles: "It takes 5 minutes to fill my gas tank." True. It also takes 5 minutes to order a burrito, and about 40 to cook one at home. Nobody says that home kitchens are a bad idea. The comparison fails because it measures the wrong thing. And once you see why, most of the anxiety about going electric evaporates. There is no missing technology here. There is no missing infrastructure. There is a habit, roughly a century old, that simply no longer applies. You have been eating every meal out A gasoline car is a house with no kitchen. Every single unit of energy the gas car will ever consume has to be picked up in person, at a dedicated commercial facility, on a schedule dictated by the tank. That's not a criticism, it's just the design. Gasoline can't be piped to (or created at) your house. There is no residential gasoline network, and there never will be. An EV is a house with a kitchen, in a world where restaurants still exist. Most nights you cook. It's cheaper, it's easier, and you never left the house to do it. When you travel, you eat out, and eating out is great. DC fast charging on a road trip is the restaurant. You are not choosing between them, you get both with an EV. The reason the "5 minutes" comparison misleads is that it measures the wrong quantity. It compares the latency of a single transaction. What actually matters is attended time: minutes of your life spent acquiring energy for your car. Run the numbers on a typical US driver at roughly 37 miles a day: Gas car. A 350 mile tank means a fill-up every 9 or 10 days. Call it three stops a month. Door to door, with the detour, the pump, the card, and the receipt, that's 10 to 15 minutes each. Roughly 40 minutes a month, all of it attended, all of it in a place you did not otherwise need to be. EV at home. Ten seconds to plug in when you get home, ten seconds to unplug in the morning. About 5 minutes a month, all of it in your driveway, none of it a trip out of your way. The car does the rest while you sleep. The EV "takes 8 hours to charge" the same way your dishwasher "takes 2 hours to run." You are not standing there watching it. The infrastructure already exists. All of it. This is the part that gets lost in the infrastructure debate, and it's the most important thing in this article. Gasoline requires a purpose-built parallel supply chain that exists for exactly one job: refineries, pipelines, terminals, a tanker truck fleet, buried double-walled tanks, vapor recovery, dispensers, and the environmental regime that governs all of it. If that network did not already exist, building it from scratch today would be a national infrastructure program. Electricity already arrives at essentially every occupied building in the country. In the course of your day, you are probably never more than 500 ft from a source of electricity. That last-mile network was finished decades ago. We built it for lights and refrigerators and air conditioning, and it terminates about 50 to 100 feet from where you park. That gap is the entire problem. Not generation. Not transmission. Not distribution. The last 50 to 100 feet. And it is a small problem: A Level 2 charger at 40 amps and 9.6 kW is an electric clothes dryer, AC system, or electric range. Your house was engineered for loads like this. The EV generally charges overnight (scheduled from your car or charger) when the neighborhood transformer is idle and cool. This is the least disruptive load to a utility, which is why so many of them offer discounted electric rates to encourage it. Solving it means a circuit breaker, a run of wire, and a charger. If the panel is in the garage, that often runs from a few hundred dollars to about $1,500. Harder cases exist (long runs, a detached garage, an older service), and can cost more, but the infrastructure upgrade outlasts the car. It can even charge many vehicles in the same household. You may not need any of it. A standard 120V outlet at 12 amps can add 30 to 40 miles overnight, roughly what an average driver uses in a day. Plenty of owners run "Level 1" charging for years and never install anything. A panel upgrade is usually avoidable. Modern load-managing chargers and circuit-sharing devices let a charger coexist with existing loads instead of demanding new service. Consider how the projected buildout actually breaks down: of the roughly 28 million charging ports the US is expected to need by 2030, about 92% are private ports at single-family homes. Public DC fast charging is around 1% of the port count, but gets all the headlines. The national conversation about "charging infrastructure" is almost entirely about that 1%, while the 92% gets solved one driveway at a time, by an electrician, in an afternoon. Not everyone gets to make that call on their own schedule. Roughly half to two thirds of the country parks somewhere they own or control, and those people can solve this the week they buy their first EV. The rest are waiting on someone else: their landlord, their workplace, or their city. But it's the same fix at a different scale. Electricity already arrives at the apartment building or office complex, and it already runs down every residential street. The gap is still the last hundred feet, from the panel to the parking space. One conduit run to a row of parking spaces costs less per space than forty separate driveways, and a car sitting for twelve hours doesn't need much power, so a few kW per space covers a full day of driving. Cities working on curbside parking keep landing on the same answer, which is that the wire is already overhead feeding the streetlights. That work is real and has barely started in most of the country, but it's permits, capital, and landlord incentives. Nothing has to be invented. For the ones with a driveway or a garage, though: you are not waiting on anyone. Not the government, not the utility, not a breakthrough. The electricity is already at your meter. That is still tens of millions of households for whom the entire infrastructure debate is already over and nobody told them. You can cook at home. "Going to get gas" is obsolete Put those two ideas together and something interesting happens: the errand disappears. Not "gets faster." It disappears altogether. Your car is full every morning. You never plan around fuel, never go out of your way to route past a station, never stand outside in the winter holding a nozzle for 5 minutes, never get caught off-guard wondering whether you have enough to get to work. The entire category of "getting fuel" is deleted from life. Compare the two vehicles honestly: Gas car: 350 miles of range, 0% of it obtainable at home. EV: 300 miles of range, 100% of it obtainable at home. The second one is more convenient nearly every day of the year. The first one wins only on the road trip, and even there the gap is narrower than it sounds, because you stop every ~3 hours for a break anyway. A 15 to 20 minute charge is not added to your trip. It is the stop you were already going to take for a restroom and a coffee. The 5-minute fill-up is not a feature you are giving up. It's a solution to a problem you no longer have. And if you are still attached to the number itself, hold on a moment. BYD's Super e-Platform runs a 1,000 volt architecture at up to 1,000 amps, one full megawatt, and adds up to 250 miles in five minutes. That is not a concept car. It has been in production vehicles in China since 2025, and megawatt charging sites are now being deployed in Europe as well. The 5-minute EV fill-up is coming soon to a fast charger near you. Which puts the objection in an awkward spot. It's an argument against a target that is already being hit (in some parts of the world), about a use case that represents maybe 5-10% of your charging, in defense of an errand you would stop running anyway. The switch is between your ears There is no missing piece of technology. The cars are here, they are fast, they are safe, and they last. The electricity is here, and it is already at your house, your workplace, your city streets. The grid has been quietly delivering it to your address every day of your life. All that's left is a wire that runs the last 50 to 100 feet, and the willingness to stop thinking like someone who has to go out to a restaurant for every meal. That is not a technology problem.
